Benazir Income Support Program Introduction::

The Benazir Income Support Project (BISP) is Pakistan's government's anti-poverty project. Initially implemented in July 2008, it was the largest single social safety net initiative in the country, with about Rs. 90 billion ($900 million) distributed to 5.4 million members in 2016.

In 2016, the project provided Rs. 19,338 (about $195) each month on a yearly basis.[4] A smart card is utilized to pay the stipend, which is linked to the Consumer Price Index.[5] The Department for International Development of the United Kingdom provided $244 million (or 27 percent) of the program's overall funding in 2016, with the rest funds coming from the Pakistani government.

As of 2020, the Ehsaas initiative had surpassed BISP as the largest social assistance project in Pakistan. With the formation of a new ministry named Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety (PASS), the Benazir Income Support Programme became a member of the Poverty Alleviation and Social Security Division [8] and [9].

President Asif Ali Zardari encouraged Yousaf Raza Gillani 2008 to establish the Benazir Income Support Programme. The program's name is a tribute to Benazir Bhutto, a former prime minister and President Zardari's wife who was assassinated in 2007.

Since 2005, high inflation and rising food and petrol prices have eroded the purchasing power of many Pakistani families. In light of this, the BISP was created to address diminishing purchasing power.

The BISP aims to empower women while also encouraging economic growth by making direct financial transfers to female family members.

Using a conditional cash transfer, the Benazir Income Support Programme is launching a new initiative that will promote the development of human capital. Cash payments under the Waseela-e-Taleem scheme will be contingent on eligible households' children enrolling in primary school.

During the 2009-2010 fiscal year, the scheme was expanded to encompass 5 million low-income households.[12] When the scheme began in 2008, the Pakistani government funded RS 34 billion ($425 million); funding increased to RS 70 billion ($875 million) the following year.
